The importance of community service.
In case you missed it amongst the news about COVID-19, April is National Volunteer Month. Each community values volunteering in their own way, and in the wake of a global pandemic, volunteering is more critical than ever.
Around Matchbook, the subject of volunteering or community service brings an air of excitement. We take time out of our work schedules each quarter to spend a day volunteering together to serve a local 501c(3) organization. We intentionally choose to partner with companies and organizations who are purpose-focused and reflect those same values of improving the community.
Several agency team members volunteer with Indianapolis-based nonprofit organizations, and many serve on the Board of Directors for worthy organizations. Some of those include:
We celebrate all volunteers who dedicate their time, talent, and treasure to worthy causes. If you’re looking for ways to volunteer for a local nonprofit virtually, or while practicing safe distancing, here are some of our recommendations:
Brighten the day of a child being served a hot meal by the Patachou Foundation by writing a colorful, positive inspiring note for their lunchbox letters for kids
Indiana Diaper Bank
, wipes and baby care products at select drop locations around Indianapolis to help families in need.
This local food bank, which relies on hundreds of volunteers per week, has had to re-organize their sorting, packing and distribution services. Making a donation
of just $20 can provide a family with an entire meal box to ensure food security during a very difficult time.
This in-home solutions organization helps older adults and those of any age with a disability flourish. They are looking for volunteers to call seniors to check in on them. To volunteer, sign up here.
Westminster Food Services
Westminster needs volunteers who can pack bags of food to distribute to near-east side families via its pantry. Connect with them
to volunteer or make a donation.
With all the time being spent at home, there has never been a better time to become a foster family
for an adoptable animal! You can sign up to become a foster on their website and do a virtual training. Pet supplies, food and medical care are provided.
Coburn is asking homebound Hoosiers
to print or cut out crosswords, puzzles, and other paper activities to create a packet for its residents, who are survivors of domestic abuse. You can also make “welcome home” cards or donate diapers and trash bags.
PUP Indy Mask Project
This nonprofit is ramping up their production lines to address the shortage of protective fabric masks (PPE) for community health centers, childcare centers for families of first responders, and long-term care facilities. You can donate materials
or make a donation.
The kind folks at Giving Tuesday have rallied the nonprofit community together to expand the efforts of this inspiring day, which is typically held in November. They are launching #GivingTuesdayNow,
a global day of unity, which will take place on May 5, 2020, as a response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Matchbook will be joining in as our team members will either be donating to, volunteering with, or supporting fundraising efforts alongside an organization that best fits their personal passion.
Wherever you are in the world, we hope you’ll join us in making even a small effort to improve your community during National Volunteer Month.
